Drive + Q&A with Nicolas Winding Refn – BFI

Drive is an exceedingly stylish film that startles you out of an appreciative smile with several shockingly violent scenes. I don’t think I’m squeamish, but there was one sequence I couldn’t watch.

Ryan Gosling plays the Driver – an American movie hero in the footsteps of many a Clint Eastwood character. Carey Mulligan plays the girl he falls for, and many of their scenes are light on dialogue and action. For all the violence, there’s no sex at all.

The soundtrack is excellent, and director Nicolas Winding Refn explained in the Q&A that followed the film how hard he fought for it. Good thing too. A good but not great film, that has echoes of Tarantino running through it and a nagging feeling that Gosling’s trying too hard to channel Steve McQueen. 8/10
