Joel Plaskett at The Luminaire

The day that London got its head round the imminent closure of Kilburn’s Luminaire saw me there amidst a sea of Canadians listening to Joel Plaskett accompanied by his Dad Bill.

Imagine a young Ralph Feinnes crossed with Neil Finn to get a sense of Plaskett’s mix of boyish charm and folk-inspired songs. The crowd sang along to songs I didn’know, and there was the strong sense of place that inhabits so much Canadian songwriting. Plaskett’s repertoire is wide, with pop, rock’n’roll and folk influences all apparent. I enjoyed it but wasn’t blown away. The support act, Russell Joslin, on the other hand was bloody brilliant.

Plaskett 7/10, Joslin 9/10
